Chapter Seven

I headed back home, letting my mind chew on some of the facts that I’d learned that morning. Actually, there weren’t that many, and I had more questions than answers.

Annabelle, Essie and Granger were standing at the foot of the stairs. The women looked very angry. Granger seemed kind of worried and nervous looking but maybe he didn’t have enough energy to be angry.

“You’re really going through with this aren’t you?” Annabelle demanded the moment I was inside the door.

“I really am. I’m going to get rid of you and your family once and for all,” I said, smiling triumphantly.

“You are despicable,” she said, flouncing into the dining room with more energy than I’d ever seen. Essie and Granger followed.

“Now, sister, calm down. You’ll work yourself into a tizzy,” Essie said.

“He has no right,” Annabelle all but shouted.

“I do have a right. This is my home now. If you guys would just go ahead and cross over or whatever you need to do, we wouldn’t have to go through with this,” I explained.

“We told you we would as soon as Granger is strong enough,” Essie explained.

“Granger is strong enough,” I said. “And don’t forget to take Hiram with you when you leave today.”

“We have no control over Grandfather,” Annabelle lifted her chin defiantly, reminding me of Gabe’s grandmother.

“Then I’ll have to take care of him myself,” I said, facing the three of them across the dining room table. “Either way, you’re all gone tonight.”

Max whined and leaned heavily against my leg.

The two women disappeared with an airy little crackle. That left Granger standing there alone looking at me. “What are these men going to do?”

I shrugged. “Send you over to the other side, I guess.”

“It’s a scary thought,” he confessed.

“I’m sure it is, but we all have to go sooner or later,” I told him.

“What might happen?”

I shrugged. “I watched Colleen cross over.”

He flinched at the mention of his wife’s name, the woman who played a big part in his demise.

“The baby was there waiting for her. It didn’t look like such a bad thing.”

Granger winked out of existence without another word.

Just about dark, a white van pulled into the driveway.

“Hope you guys have your bags packed,” I shouted to the empty dining room before stepping outside to greet my guests.

Two men climbed out of the vehicle, one tall and thin, the other heavier and shorter. The heavier man looked to be about my age with dark hair and a mustache. The young one wore thick rimmed glasses and carried a heavy looking satchel of sorts over his shoulder. Both were dressed in jeans and t-shirts that featured their logo across the chest.

“Gentlemen,” I said, meeting them on the porch.

“We’re with Paranormal Investigators of Georgia,” the older man said, holding out his hand. “Gene Richards.”

“I’m Ace Baxter,” I said, shaking his hand.

The younger man was hanging back a little, looking up at the house.

“This is my partner, Donald Monk,” Gene explained.

I shook the younger man’s hand as well but he seemed distracted with the house and his eyes never met mine.
